Dr. James Scott (Flute) and Dr. Marcin Parys (Piano) will perform an all-German program with music Music of Johann Sebastian Bach, Telemann, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, Muethel, and Boehm, representing the transition from Baroque to Classical.
Dr. Scott has crafted a program that addresses two major transitions—that from what we consider the Baroque era in music to the “Classical” and from the Classical to the Romantic. The first of these involves a rebalancing of contrapuntal elements and homophony, a transition from the dominance of the harpsichord to the fortepiano, and an increasing expectation of symmetrical forms. The second includes an expansion of harmonic possibilities, a stronger relationship to literature, an increase in instrumental virtuosity, and a loosening of formal structures typical of the Classical period.
