Berlin Alexanderplatz is a 2020 drama film directed by Burhan Qurbani. In this visually stunning cinematic update of Alfred Döblin’s classic novel, Francis, an undocumented immigrant, arrives in Berlin with high hopes and the intention of being a decent person. But both the city and circumstances are against him.
The film follows the character of Francis, a refugee who arrives in Berlin and struggles with the new reality. After surviving the perilous journey from Africa, Francis realizes how difficult it is to be righteous while undocumented in Germany. When he receives an enticing offer for easy money from a psychopathic gangster, Francis initially resists temptation but is soon sucked into Berlin’s underworld.
Qurbani’s new adaptation of Alfred Döblin’s novel is a courageous undertaking in view of the giant footsteps of Rainer Werner Fassbinder, who filmed the novel as a 15-hour television series in 1979/80.
