Film Discussion Transit (2018)

Transit is a 2018 German drama film written and directed by Christian Petzold. The film follows a refugee (Franz Rogowski) who impersonates a dead writer in an attempt to flee a fascist state.

In 1942, Georg attempts to flee France, after its invasion by the Nazis. He assumes the identity of a dead author, but soon finds himself stuck in Marseilles, where he falls in love with Maria, a young woman searching for her missing husband.

Transit is a free adaptation of Anna Seghers’ novel of the same name (1944) about the fate of refugees from the Nazi regime who hope for passage overseas by ship in Marseille before the Germans invade the city. Director Christian Petzold plays with the time periods in a subtle way by setting the adaptation in the 1940s in terms of dialogue and plot but using contemporary costumes and locations.
