Film Discussion: Der Richter und sein Henker (End of the Game)

Der Richter und sein Henker (End of the Game) is a 1975 DeLuxe Color German mystery thriller film directed by Maximilian Schell, and starring Jon Voight, Jacqueline Bisset, Martin Ritt and Robert Shaw. Co-written by the Swiss writer Friedrich Dürrenmatt, the film is an adaptation and based on his 1950 crime novel of the same name. Dürrenmatt also appears in the film.

End of the Game is about the psychological duel between a police officer and a murderer and turns a standard murder investigation into a high-stakes, lifetime chess match between two dying men. Once the policeman had to tolerate that he could not prosecute his opponent although his guilt was established for him. Years later, however, he gets another chance.

The story opens with a 1948 prologue in Istanbul before moving to Switzerland thirty years later. Police officer Ulrich Schmied is shot and killed on a country road. Aging, ailing police commissioner Bärlach (Martin Ritt) and ambitious young detective Tschanz (Jon Voight) are assigned to the case.
