Film Discussion “Wings of Desire – Der Himmel über Berlin”
March 18 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Wings of Desire (Der Himmel über Berlin / The Sky/Heaven over Berlin) is a 1987 German romantic fantasy film about an angel who tires of overseeing human activity and wishes to become human when he falls in love with a mortal. It was partially inspired by the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke. Directed by Wim Wenders. Written by Wim Wenders and Peter Handke.
Two angels, Damiel (Bruno Ganz) and Cassiel (Otto Sander), glide through the streets of Berlin, observing the bustling population, providing invisible rays of hope to the distressed but never interacting with them. When Damiel falls in love with a beautiful trapeze artist, he is willing to give up his immortality and come back to earth to be with her.
Wings of Desire is one of cinema’s loveliest city symphonies. Made not long before the fall of the Berlin wall, this stunning tapestry of sounds and images, shot in black and white and color by the legendary Henri Alekan, is movie poetry. And it forever made the name Wim Wenders synonymous with film art.
