History

Founded in 1965, the Dallas Goethe Center is an institution created to foster an appreciation of German art, drama, music, language, literature, and history, and to cultivate cross-cultural dialogue.

Under the leadership of Gershon Canaan, a Jewish refugee from Berlin, the Dallas Goethe Center was first established to enable those with a shared interest in German culture to come together, exchange ideas and opinions. Gershon Canaan contemplated his religious and cultural roots, found them not mutually exclusive and - together with leaders of area universities - set out to devote himself to promoting mutual understanding between Americans and Germans.

Our German language program originally operated by the German American Club of Dallas was reestablished in the early nineties by members of the Dallas Goethe Center and fully integrated into the Dallas Goethe Center during the year 1998/99.
